Gematria is the practice of converting words, names and phrases into numbers and number sequences. The following are the three methods, and instructions for how to calculate them, with examples.
The Standard Method
In the Standard Method, each letter A through Z has a numeric value; where A = 1 and Z = 26, because A is the first letter and Z is twenty-sixth and last. We will use the word "York" as an example.
- York = 25+15+18+11 = 69
- Y = 25th letter in alphabet
- O = 15th letter in alphabet
- R = 18th letter in alphabet
- K = 11th letter in alphabet
In the Pythagorean Method, each letter A through Z has a 'compressed' value; where A = 1 and Z = 8 (because 2+6 = 8). Again, we will use the word York as an example.
- York = 7+6+9+2 = 24
- Y = 7 because Y = 25th letter and 2+5 = 7
- O = 6 because O = 15th letter and 1+5 = 6
- R = 9 because R = 18th letter and 1+8 = 9
- K = 2 because K = 11th letter and 1+1 = 2
In Pythagorean Numerology, some sources say standard procedure is to reduce all letter values to their smallest single digit, with exceptions to K and V because they are multiples of eleven, where K = 11th letter and V = 22nd letter. Again, we will use York as an example to distinguish the difference.
- York = 7+6+9+11 = 33
- Y = 7 because Y = 25th letter and 2+5 = 7
- O = 6 because O = 15th letter and 1+5 = 6
- R = 9 because R = 18th letter and 1+8 = 9
- K = 11 because K = 11th letter and K and V are not reduced.
Above, we got the following values for the word "York"; 69 from the Standard Method, 24 from the Pythagorean Method, and 33 from the Pythagorean, Exception K & V Method. In numerology, a value is not finally realized until it is summed to a single digit, with the exception to multiples of eleven; thus you do not need to reduce 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, etc.
Thus, we must reduces the values 69 and 24 from above, but not 33.

- 69 reduces to 15 because 6+9 = 15
- 15 reduces to 6 because 1+5 = 6
- 24
- 24 reduces to 6 because 2+4 = 6
- 33
- Does not need to be reduced.. however, if you do...
- 33 reduces to 6, because 3+3 = 6
- Notice how all digits reduce to the same single digit, no matter what method you use. In this case, they all reduce to 6.

- Starbucks = 19+20+1+18+2+21+3+11+19 = 114
- Pythagorean
- Starbucks = 1+2+1+9+2+3+3+2+1 = 24

- Starbucks = 1+2+1+9+2+3+3+11+1 = 33
