The Steelers and Bengals will meet for the 93rd team in their histories this Saturday, in the AFC Wild Card Round. The Steelers are the favorites, despite having a worse record and playing on the road.

In the history of the two teams, they have only met once in the playoffs, a decade ago, January 8, 2006. Notice the Steelers won that game, also in Cincinnati, 31-17. That season the Steelers and Bengals both finished with 11-5 records, with Cinci having the divisional advantage.

It is interesting to note that the 49ers are hosting Super Bowl 50 this year. In history, the 49ers have defeated the Bengals twice in Super Bowls, and in the last decade, the Steelers have surpassed the 49ers in Super Bowl wins by defeating the 49ers divisional rivals, the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers also have the '49' connection in gematria, and opened up the season by losing to the Patriots, fresh off of Super Bowl 49, in a game where the sum of the score was '49'.
In the last four seasons, the Steelers have been relatively successful in Cincinnati. They have won 3 and lost 1. Notice the last time they played, they won 33-20. Both the Bengals and Steelers have '33' connections. The Steelers joined the NFL in '33, and the Bengals are one of only three teams with a '33' name gematria. The Bengals also wear orange, the only color with '33' gematria.
Another interesting thing about this matchup, it is between two the very few black head coaches in the NFL.
