223 | New York Stock Exchange Reporting

I am confused by this reporting from The New York Times.  Why did they use the number 223 when the NYSE is only 198-years old?  What are they trying to communicate?  I have an idea....

  1. They are counting the Buttonwood trading agreement as the start of the NYSE, which is a huge stretch. Makes as much sense as saying the date of the first American football game played was the start of the NFL.

    Another nod to the SoS.
