In 2005, Aaron Rodgers came out of Cal a year early because he thought he would be taken #1 overall by the local San Francisco 49ers, who had the top pick. On the day of the draft, the 49ers selected Alex Smith instead. Rodgers would fall to the #24 pick, by the Green Bay Packers. What's comical about the story, is Mike McCarthy was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers at the time of the 2005 NFL Draft, and they say it was him who wants Smith over Rodgers. Well, the next year, McCarthy would be shipped to the Green Bay Packers as the head coach, and he would inherit Rodgers as his QB, who he supposedly didn't want as much as Alex Smith.
Remember, Rodgers got to sit behind Favre for a few years, while Smith got thrown to the fire in his rookie season. Smith finished his rookie campaign with the 49ers, throwing 1 TD and 11 INTs.
Alex Smith = 111 (#1 overall pick)
For both men, this is their 12th season in the league. Smith wears #11, Rodgers #12.
