33 | Cricket, the First Major Leauge Sport in the United States of America

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players each on a field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings.  The sport of baseball has its roots in Cricket, and Cricket was the first sport to be played in the modern day United States on a "major league" level dating back to the end of the 18th Century, approximately 1793.
  • Cricket = 3+9+9+3+2+5+2 = 33
Doesn't the numerology of "33" align well with the 11 players and 22-yard long pitch?

Better yet, why is it that so many sports we play, watch, and enjoy have 11-players on each side?  How did that come to be?  It is true of soccer, football and cricket.  It should be noted that modern baseball allows for 9-players on the field, a number that has an interesting relationship with 11.  Also in baseball, when a strikeout is recorded, it is referred to as a "K", the 11th letter.

The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).  Talk about perfect abbreviations, at least for cricket.
  • ICC = 933
  • MCC = 1333
