The first pick of the 1992 NBA Draft, Shaquille O'Neal |
In 1980, the NBA began televising their drafts for the first time in the history of the league. Below is a list of NBA drafts from when they began being televised in 1980, up through 2001. Since 2001, all drafts have been held in New York City, New York. What I wanted to focus on this post, was the 1992 NBA Draft, the first to take place outside of New York City, in Portland, Oregon, the 33rd State. As it happens, the date of the draft, is the only NBA draft in the history of the league with "33" numerology. Let us examine.
- June 24, 1992 = 6/24/1992 = 6+2+4+1+9+9+2 = 33
NBA Draft 1980-2001:
- 1980: June 10, 1980 - NYC
- 1981: June 9, 1981 - NYC
- 1982: June 29, 1982 - NYC
- 1983: June 28, 1983 - NYC
- 1984: June 19, 1984 - NYC
- 1985: June 18, 1985 - NYC
- 1986: June 17, 1986 - NYC
- 1987: June 22, 1987 - NYC
- 1988: June 28, 1988 - NYC
- 1989: June 27, 1989 - NYC
- 1990: June 27, 1990 - NYC
- 1991: June 26, 1991 - NYC
- 1992: June 24, 1992 - Portland, OR
- 1993: June 30, 1993 - Auburn Hills, MI
- 1994: June 29, 1994 - Indianapolis, IN
- 1995: June 28, 1995 - Toronto, Ontario
- 1996: June 26, 1996 - East Rutherford, NJ
- 1997: June 25, 1997 - Charlotte, NC
- 1998: June 24, 1998 - Vancouver, B.C.
- 1999: June 30, 1999 - Washington, D.C.
- 2000: June 28, 2000 - Minneapolis, MN
- 2001: June 27, 2001 - NYC
Before the 1992 draft occurred, analysts and experts were saying it was going to be a very special draft, possibly the best ever. This is because the first three picks were names most fans of the NBA and college basketball well know. The top three picks that year were as follows:
- Shaquille O'Neal
- Alonzo Mourning
- Christian Laettener
O'Neal was drafted by the Orland "Magic", who held the rights to the first draft selection that year.
Shaquille O'Neal is a proud Freemason and Alonzo Mourning wore the number 33 for his entire career. Shaquille O'Neal had a legendary NBA career, and Alonzo Mourning had a successful one as well. Both men won a championship together in 2006, along with teammate Dwayne Wade, playing for the Miami Heat, who just lost in the NBA Finals last evening.
So what's the point? Just to bring awareness to this celebration of "33" happening all around us, usually without our awareness. If you mean to tell me the first draft outside of NYC and in the 33rd State Oregon, with a numerology for the date of "33", is a giant coincidence, then you my friend, are a coincidence theorist. Patrick Ewing was the #1 Pick in 1985 | Patrick = 7+1+2+9+9+3+2 = 33 |
Yeah I remember Shaq mentioning himself being a Free Mason. For the Ewing one, you should also add the video on Stern freezing the envelope along with bending the corners to make sure the Knicks got that pick.
