The first shots of the Civil War were fired in Charleston, April 12, 1861, and the first death came a week later, April 19, 1861, in Baltimore.

The Freddie Gray death was very much connected to the Charleston shootings of Walter Scott, April 4, 2015 and the Charleston Church shooting of June 17, 2015.
