The Manhattan Project began in 1939, and grew to have 130,000 people working in secret towards the development of a nuclear bomb.  The military's portion of the operation was known as the 'Manhattan District'.  Remember, if anyone ever tells you 'the government can't keep a secret', remind them to learn about the Manhattan Project.
