In the very first NFL game ever played between the Cardinals and the 49ers on November 18, 1951, the visitors from Chicago emerged with a surprising 27-21 victory. "Actually, it was a game the 49ers didn't deserve to win," groused the Oakland (CA) Tribune. "They took the field in the first half like a lethargic bunch of bushers." Ouch!
Basically, San Francisco could not contain the solid rushing attack of the Cardinals which pounded out 248 yards on the ground. In addition, quarterback Charley Trippi completed 8-16 passes for another 189 yards. Prior to the contest, the visitors were not given much hope of success as noted by the Albany (OR) Democrat-Herald: "The Chicago Cardinals, who have won only one of their seven starts, face a tough task in trying to boost their slim victory total at San Francisco (4-3)." Nevertheless, the rushing prowess of Trippi (61 yards), Elmer Angsman (31 yards) and Emil Sitko (87 yards on just six carries) baffled the losers throughout the afternoon. As one member of the 49ers said to the diminutive Sitko after the game: "You sawed-off little runt, you sure broke our back!"
It was a welcome win for the team which was in the midst of a difficult 1951 season under the leadership of Coach Curly Lambeau, whose tenure as the head coach of the Cards would not survive the season as the club finished with a woeful 3-9 mark. (Game advertisement from the San Francisco Examiner)

The Cardinals initial encounter with a professional team in the San Francisco area occurred on December 9, 1934 with they knocked off the Stanford Braves 37-2 during a post-season west coast tour. Due to the extra games on the tour, the Cardinals compiled a solid 16-6 ledger in 1934. Unfortunately, the team wrapped up the NFL season with just a 5-6 mark.
